Sensory Masking

It is well known that ancestral beauty practices of ancient Egyptian queens took hours, and required a team of maidservants. While we have neither the luxury of maidens nor an abundance of time, we can create our own conscious beauty rituals. Discover a deeper connection with your skin by following this masking ritual. Making just a few changes to your mask application technique can create a more  sensory experience.

Tools

  1. Mixing bowl, if using clay mask

  2. Spoon or spatula for mixing

  3. Mask/Makeup brush

  4. Clean washcloth or hand towel

  5. Face toner (optional)

  6. Heavy or Nighttime Moisturizer

  7. Relaxation items

  4. Smooth the mask from the corner of your mouth across your right cheek. Using horizontal strokes up to your upper cheek to the corner of your eye. Repeat on the left side.

  6. Brush the mask downwards on your nose. If double-masking to target a specific condition in this area, use a different brush to apply your target mask blend.

3. Mindful Relaxation

This is the period should not exceed 10 minutes, which is the strict amount of time you want to leave your mask on. So spend it doing a "quiet" activity. One activity may be to spend 10-minutes journaling. If you don't journal, this may be a good thing to start. Journaling doesn't have to be strict, or even practiced every day. It shouldn't feel like yet another obligatory thing you have to do for well-being. Journaling can be anything from a simple doodle, a singular word with the date, one sentence, or an entire paragraph. Write whatever you're feeling or thinking in the moment.

The point here is to do something other than what you normally would do during masking like shaving or giving yourself a mani/pedi. This time is for caring for your inner-self while the clay mask cares for your skin.

4. Removal

After you and your skin have embarked on a period of mindful relaxation, you don’t want to break the connection and flow by simply rubbing off your mask. Rather, continue practicing mindfulness by taking extra care during the removal process.

There are a few ways to achieve this. Moistening the set mask to loosen it will make removal more effective and smoother. You can moisten using a bit of the Sei blending elixir or your current toner.

Begin removal using a hand towel moistened with warm water. Spritzing the towel with a hydrosol or some of your Sei Blending Elixir can further enhance the sensory experience.  Gently press moisture from the washcloth onto your skin starting on your forehead and begin wiping away the mask.

If you’re currently experience rosacea, an acne breakout or inflamed skin, a cool towel should be used when removing your set mask. Keeping skin cooler is the goal for these skin conditions.

5. Balance

Now that your skin has been nourished and pampered. You'll want to hydrate and moisturize. Choose a moisturizer that is intensely hydrating and moisturizing. This should be a bit heavier than the daytime moisturizer you tyypically wear, like Sei's After Care Face Cream.

Now would be a good time to set a reminder for next week's Mindful Masking ritual.
